C
aribana or the Caribbean
Carnival took place on August
2nd in downtown Toronto. A blend
of Caribbean people lined the streets
of Toronto , jumping to calypso and
enjoying local cuisine such as doubles
and aloo pies.
It was amazing to see the people
proudly waving their national flags
and to hear the various accents
of Trinidadians, Tobagonians,
Dominicans, Guyanese, Grenadians,
St. Lucians to name a few.
At this parade, the fresh water Yankee
accents are hidden as people want to
identify with their heritage. It would be
easy to mistake the Lakeshore Blvd of
Toronto to downtown Frederick Street.
Machel performed on a truck, steel pan
was pushed on wheels, people sang
out to soca rhythms - some gyrating
as if they have never left home while
others dance totally out of time. Some
masqueraders may be Caribbean
immigrants who have not been home
in years, and this is a precious memory
to hold onto as they yearn for HOME.
Others maybe “die-hard” carnival
babies... who love their culture.
The Canadians are obviously
outnumbered but you can find them
mixing and looking on, anxious to be a
part of the Caribbean excitement. It is
hard not to get caught up in the rhythm
of the steel pan and the soca. Wave

Caribbean Carnival in Toronto
your flag and put your hand up in the
air is a command even the toddlers
being pushed in their strollers obey.
Every year the parade attracts
thousands of masqueraders and over
a million spectators. Scotiabank is the
main sponsor for the Carnival and their
red shirt band catered for over 2,000
persons (kids included). Spectators
are barred from joining in the parade
but as the day progresses, fences are
broken down and the young onlookers
unable to contain themselves join in
the fun. This is usually the signal for
some masqueraders to leave the parade
as they no longer feel as safe.
Carnival in August !!! Not quite the
same as a Trini carnival but definitely
something worth checking out.
