Where are you financially at this stage in your life? Are you happy about
your financial status or anxious about your future?
People’s needs and circumstances change at different stages of life. At the
midlife stage between ages 45–55 their focus is on job security, children’s
education, family commitments, wealth accumulation and estate planning.
At ages 56-65 people tend to concentrate on consolidation, reducing
debts, securing investments, minimizing risks and retirement goals. The
over 65 age group is more concerned about security of funds, managing
expenses, living a comfortable and healthy lifestyle and having enough
savings in the event of emergencies. Implementing a monthly budget is
critical at this stage.
Today’s economic climate has added more hardships to people’s lives, due
to several reasons; inflation, rise in food prices, reduction of income, loss
of job, high medical bills and other frustrating situations.
Each life stage requires having to set goals and being disciplined to follow
the plan. If you are not where you would like to be financially, here are
some tips you can follow:
• Take a holistic approach to living a quality and balanced life.
• Make an inventory of your assets & liabilities, noting the present
value of each to get a true picture of your financial status.
• Review your goals and write down what you want to achieve in the
short, medium and long term. Assign your savings/investment fund
to a specific goal.
• Note any obstacles in the way and what strategies you can
implement to succeed.
• Familiarize yourself with the economy and the trends in the
marketplace.
• Make some critical decisions regarding liquidation of assets,
consolidation of loans or getting involved in an income producing
venture to supplement your income.
• Have a discussion with your loved ones to outline your plans and
get their support.
• Establish an emergency/contingency fund to take care of
unexpected situations.
• Take care of your body by eating healthy. Planning your meals in
advance and making a list of what’s needed would help reduce
food cost and wastage.
• Create a monthly budget with headings ‘Fixed Expenses’ and
‘Variable Expenses’ and include savings under fixed. Make
adjustments under variable to stay within budget.
